April 2018 Principal's Message

Lewis F. Cole Middle School
April 2018

April greetings to our LFCMS parents and guardians!  It’s hard to believe that April is here and there are less than three months left in the school year.  This is the time of year where we stress the importance of your children remaining focused on their academics and finishing the school year on a strong note.  The central message that I will be sending to all of our students over the next three months will focus on this theme.  I will continue to stress the importance of finishing what we started in September and making sure that “Spring Fever” does not get in the way of academic progress.  I ask that you also stress this at home and consistently monitor your child’s Genesis gradebook to be certain that grades do not begin to decline as the summer months approach.

The big headline for this month focuses on PARCC standardized assessments in math and language arts.  The State Department of Education changed the rules last year for the influence of PARCC assessments on academic standing.  Please note that New Jersey’s Department of Education is now requiring the Algebra 1 PARCC and Language Arts 10 PARCC to be scored as proficient in order to graduate from high school.  This new regulation is now in place for all students in grades 3-9.  Since most of our 8th graders are currently taking Algebra 1, this year’s PARCC scores for those students will count towards high school graduation.  The Language Arts 10 PARCC will be given during sophomore year of high school.  The most important guidelines to follow during PARCC testing days are to have your child in bed at an appropriate time and to have him/her eat a healthy breakfast before school.  I am confident that our PARCC scores will reflect the hard work and dedication all of our teachers put into the education of your children on a daily basis.

Information regarding our Summer Math Program for Advancement is attached to the April e-mail and will be sent separately as a follow-up in the near future.  This will provide 7th grade students the opportunity to take Geometry Honors in Grade 8 if all qualifications are met.  We are hosting a parent/guardian information session on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school’s media center to discuss the summer program and the course progression chart for math at LFCMS.  I also invited all current 6th Grade parents and guardians to this meeting so they can fully understand how our math program functions at the secondary level.  Please do not hesitate to come to this meeting with questions regarding the summer math program or our math programs in general at Lewis F. Cole Middle School.

Our next PTA meeting will be held on Thursday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. in our school’s media center.  I thank all of our PTA members for all of the work they put into raising funds for our students this year.  Our PTA is currently working to organize and assist with some of our end-of-year events such as the 8th grade dinner dance, Field Day and our 8th grade graduation.  As the school year starts winding down, I encourage all of our parents and guardians to get involved in the PTA and to help support all of the events and fundraisers that are anticipated by our students.

The e-mail for this month has several attachments, which include the Summer Math Program Information, , April Parent Newsletter and April Events Calendar.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns about any of the aforementioned items.  As the school year enters marking period four, any academic concerns should be directed to your child’s guidance counselor.  Concerns related to graduation or end-of-year logistics should be directed to our main office staff.  As always, I thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you outside in the mornings and afternoons without my coat, scarf and gloves.  I am quite familiar with the adage, “April showers bring May flowers,” but snow in April is not necessary!  Let’s hope the warmer weather gets here soon!  Be well and have a great month of April!

Sincerely,

Robert Daniello, Ed.D.
