Summer Message #1 - August 4, 2017

Dear Middle School Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that July is behind us and the start of school is approximately four weeks away.  I wanted to send a summer update to keep everyone posted on upcoming procedures, events and information as you begin preparing for the 2017-2018 school year.  I know that I speak for everyone at LFCMS when I say that we are extremely excited for the start of the new school year!    

The biggest summer items of importance at the middle school level are always school supplies, student schedules, orientation dates, Chromebook distribution and mandatory forms for parents and guardians to return.  All information involving these four items is also posted for your convenience on our school’s website under the “Parent Information” tab located at the top of the page.  Our website design has changed, but the URL address has not and can be found at http://flms.flboe.com

All important information is as follows:

School Supplies
A comprehensive, detailed list of all necessary school supplies is posted on our school’s website.  This list has been customized for 7th and 8th grade supply requirements in each subject area.  It is not necessary at this time to know who your child’s teacher is in order to purchase supplies.  Please refer to this supply list when making supply purchases.  

Student Schedules
Student schedules have primarily been created based on performance in the last grade level and teacher recommendations.  Schedules will be available to view through Genesis at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31.  Any scheduling appeals can be made to one of our guidance counselors after the schedules are posted.  Guidance counselor information can be located on our school’s website.  Mrs. Waack is the guidance counselor to contact for all 7th grade inquiries and Ms. Brigida for all 8th grade inquiries.  

Orientation Dates 
Two orientations are scheduled for students and parents/guardians, respectively.  The orientations are geared towards incoming 7th grade students; however, upon request, we will include 8th graders who are new to Fort Lee.  Please contact our main office at 201-585-4660 if you wish to have an 8th grader participate in the student orientation.  The orientation dates and times are posted on our school’s website, but the information is as follows: 
*7th Grade Student Orientation – Tuesday, September 5 @ 9:30 a.m.  Students can enter the middle school’s main entrance on Stillwell Avenue.  This event ends at 11:00 a.m. so lunch will not be served.   
*7th Grade Parent/Guardian Orientation & Open House – Tuesday, September 5 @ 6:30 p.m.  Parents and Guardians can enter the middle school through the school’s main entrance on Stillwell Avenue. 

Chromebook Distribution
All students in grades 7-12 receive a Google Chromebook to assist with our classroom technology initiatives.  7th graders will receive their Chromebooks at the Student Orientation on September 5.  Any 8th grader who is new to Fort Lee or 7th grader not attending the orientation will receive his/her Chromebook on the first day of school, September 6.  Insurance for the Chromebook is offered at a minimum cost and is highly recommended but not mandatory.  Parents, guardians and students must sign the technology agreement and acknowledge receipt of the insurance option prior to students receiving the Chromebook.  Submitted forms will be checked prior to the orientation date.  Our media specialist, Mrs. Spahn, is the contact person for all Chromebook questions or concerns.    

Mandatory Forms
All parents, guardians and students must read, sign and submit all required forms prior to the start of the school year.  All forms will be available online through the Genesis Parent Portal starting on Tuesday, August 22.  There is no need to submit any hard copy paperwork to our main office, however, hard copies will be made available upon request.  All documents can be read, signed and submitted online through the Genesis Parent Portal.  The forms specific to the middle school include the following:

1.  Emergency Contact Information
2.  Media Consent Form (allows your child’s name and photo to appear in any media publication)
3.  Code of Conduct acknowledgement and agreement
4.  Technology Network Agreement
5.  Free and Reduced Lunch Form (if needed)
6.  Health Insurance Information
**Additional forms may be added. 

Middle School PTA
The middle school’s PTA is a hard-working organization that assists our school with the funding of programs and events for your children.  The PTA is a great way to stay involved in our school’s events and meet other parents and guardians who are interested in raising funds for student programs.  The annual goal is to get 100% participation from our middle school community.  Membership information will be sent towards the end of August and opportunities for signing up will be made available at the 7th grade parents/guardian orientation and our Back-to-School night.  When available, membership forms can also be dropped off in our main office during school hours. 

Hopefully, the information provided in this letter will ease some of the anxieties associated with the beginning of the school year.  More information will follow as September nears; however, please do not hesitate to contact me with any other immediate questions or concerns.  I look forward to the start of school in September and an incredibly successful 2017-2018 school year.
